Welcome to The Essential Earthworm!

Vermicomposting is the process in which Red Wigglers (type of earthworm) are used to breakdown organic material and turn it into vermicast Everywhere you go people talk about going Green. It’s not always an easy thing to do, but if everyone can make one small change in their life, the impact on the world could be incredible.

Vermicomposting is the process in which Red Wigglers (type of earthworm) are used to breakdown organic material and turn it into vermicast. Vermicast, also known as worm castings, worm manure, or just worm poo, contains water soluble nutrients and bacteria making it a nutrient rich organic fertilizer and soil conditioner.

Did you know that you could decrease the amount of waste going into landfills by 8% just by using worms to eat your kitchen waste? The end result is that you will have this dark rich (often called black gold) organic fertilizer. This is what is called sustainability. Right now we are living in an unsustainable world, we are not putting resources back into the earth as fast as we take.

The Red Wiggler, also known as Eisenia foetida, is different from the earthworms you find while digging in your garden. They are top feeders and don’t mind living in crowded conditions. They are prolific eaters and breeders. They are a under used resource given to us by the earth. For such a small creature to have such a great influence, is truly a gift.

Vermicomposting with worms is not difficult do and it is the goal of The Essential Earthworm to educate, advocate, and assist anyone who has an interest in learning about this process. We believe it is something that everyone can do no matter where you live.

“It may be doubted whether there are many other animals which have played so important a part in the history of the world as these lowly organized creatures." -Darwin
